| The need for medical and community interpreters is rapidly increasing, and so is the demand for trained professionals in the field. The Center for Business and Technology at Springfield Technical Community College (STCC) will offer a nine-week certificate program designed to prepare individuals for an entry-level career as a medical and community interpreter. This program is offered in collaboration with Global Link Translations & Interpreting Services, a provider of language interpreting and translation services, located in the Springfield Business Incubator at the STCC Technology Park. This program will help prepare new and experienced interpreters to work in hospitals, health clinics, law offices, governmental agencies and more, following the standards and ethics of the profession. This course is open to all languages, but students must be able to fully comprehend and communicate in both English and at least one other language. Because a selective interview is required before acceptance, students must register well in advance. The college will issue a certificate upon satisfactory completion of this course and participants receiving a certificate will be given the opportunity to interview with Global Link Translations & Interpreting Services for potential employment as interpreters. *** The very popular Interior Design Certificate Program, taught by Interior Designer Janet Lyon, long-time owner of Janet Lyon Interiors, will begin soon at STCC. This program is offered by the Center for Business and Technology at the college and provides participants with the opportunity to learn decorating and design secrets from a practicing professional. Students may choose to take single courses or complete all six of the courses required for the Certificate in Interior Design. Interior Design I: Decorator Secrets Revealed Interior Design II History of Design Textiles Marketing Through Color and Design Commercial Design A wide variety of field trips and student projects in this program make the theory and practice of interior design a real "hands-on" experience. *** The CBT will offer a number of programs during the upcoming term that will prepare individuals to meet qualifications for the Yellow Belt, a designation that documents an employee's broad understanding of the Six Sigma improvement methodology, concepts and language a well as the basic process improvement methods that can be applied within a Six Sigma framework. Yellow Belts participate as core team members or subject matter experts (SME) working on projects within their companies and are often responsible for running smaller process improvement projects. Upcoming workshops include: Six Sigma Day on Sept. 16 Statistics Day (Statistical Process Control) on Sept. 23 and Lean Day on Oct. 23 Completion of all three programs will meet qualifications for the Yellow Belt but individuals may also choose to enroll in only one or two of the programs based on interest. All workshops will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will be taught by Herb Robbins, a Six Sigma Certified Master Black Belt with over 25 years in the fields of Quality Improvement and Operational Excellence. The programs will provide many hands-on opportunities including a hands-on factory simulation where participants work as part of a team, learn how the tools of Six Sigma and 5S fit into the streamlining process, and put what they learn to immediate use within their organizations.
