Columbia Gas encourages locals to apply to Good Neighbor Energy Fund

Date: 6/18/2014

GREATER SPRINGFIELD –  Even though the cold winter months are becoming a distant memory, Columbia Gas of Massachusetts continues to encourage those in need of energy assistance to apply to the Massachusetts Good Neighbor Energy Fund.

Columbia Gas of Massachusetts, a sponsor of the Good Neighbor Energy Fund, asks that Massachusetts residents visit their local Salvation Army Corps Community Center or call 800-262-1320 for those who live in area code 413 or 800-334-3047 if residing in area codes 508, 617, 781 or 978 to determine if the Fund can be a source of relief.

The Massachusetts Good Neighbor Energy Fund is a safety net for families who are in temporary crisis and do not qualify for federal and state fuel assistance programs such as Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program.

The Salvation Army, which administers the Fund, pays the energy provider directly for households whose gross household income falls between 60 and 80 percent of the state’s median income levels. For example, a household size of two would need to have a total gross yearly income of between $41,932 and $55,908 to qualify. A household of four would need to have a yearly income of between $61,664 and $82,218 to qualify, etc. This year’s Fund disbursement is $250 per eligible household per heating season.

“The generosity displayed toward the Good Neighbor Energy Fund by the customers of the 25 utilities in the Commonwealth who sponsor the program, including Columbia Gas is once again very much appreciated,” Steve Bryant, president of  Columbia Gas, said. “There are still funds left so even though spring is here and summer is right around the corner, we encourage anyone who thinks they might be eligible, to apply for assistance.”

Maj. David Kelly of The Salvation Army said, “We are so grateful for all the contributions to the Fund and for the giving spirit of the sponsoring energy companies and residents across the Commonwealth. That being said, the Fund obviously has a finite amount of money available and it’s being disbursed every day so we ask that families who are having trouble making ends meet visit one of our Community Centers or call us soon.”

The Fund’s campaign relies on the generosity of individuals, families and local corporations for support. Massachusetts residents who wish to support the Fund can “Give the Gift of Warmth” by donating with a credit card online at www.magoodneighbor.org and checking the appropriate box or by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY. Donors can also simply mail a check payable to “The Good Neighbor Energy Fund” and send it to The Salvation Army, 25 Shawmut Road, Canton, MA 02021-1408.

Participating energy companies support their respective customers’ generosity through various giving programs, including an annual donation envelope mail campaign, which takes place during the winter months.
