Enjoy a 'Taste of Philanthropy' March 18

SPRINGFIELD Women in Philanthropy of Western Massachusetts, in partnership with American International College, will host a Conference for Development and Fundraising Professionals in Pioneer Valley.

The "Taste of Philanthropy" conference will take place March 18 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Springfield Marriott Hotel and Conference Center.

The conference is expected to draw nearly 200 nonprofit Advancement, Development, Marketing and Communications professionals and volunteers from the region's nonprofit community organizations.

Simone Joyaux, the author of "Strategic Fund Development: Building Profitable Relationships That Last," will deliver the morning address. She presents worldwide, and serves as faculty for the master's program in philanthropy and development at Saint Mary's University of Minnesota. Joyaux serves regularly on boards, founded the Women's Fund of R.I., and is a former chair of CFRE International.

The luncheon speaker will be Carol Weisman, the president of Board Builders. She works primarily in the U.S., Canada, the U.K. and Australia. She specializes in fundraising, philanthropy and governance. Weisman has served on 29 boards and has been president of seven. She began her professional career working with street gangs and found the gangs better organized, with clearer expectations and a solid leadership training program. Weisman is the author of eight books on fundraising, governance and philanthropy.

There will be several workshops offered including sessions on grant writing, board leadership, planned giving and the art of public speaking.

Workshop presenters include Ronald Copes, retired vice president, MassMutual; Joyce Bernstein, owner and general manager, Spice Restaurant and Burger; Nisa Joy Zalta, director of Fund Development, Sisters of Providence Health Systems; and Eugenia Collins, retired associate vice president for development, Clarke School for the Deaf.
