'Essentials of Supervision' offered to area businesses

Date: 4/22/2010

HOLYOKE The Kittredge Center for Business & Workforce Development at Holyoke Community College (HCC) is offering to company representatives a free showcase of its new Essentials of Supervision Certificate Program on May 3 at the HCC campus. The program is designed for individuals seeking to gain supervision skills and for companies to provide professional development to their current and upcoming supervisors.

"Unemployed and dislocated workers may have a wealth of technical knowledge and experience, and perhaps even some on-the-job supervisory experience, but lack formal training in how to supervise employees," said Keith M. Hensley, HCC executive director of workforce and economic development. "Earning the program certificate will add credentials that may open up new employment opportunities."

Many companies in our region have a "promote from within" philosophy, but Hensley said, "They frequently encounter technically qualified employees who fail as supervisors when they are promoted." The skills gained through the certificate program will enhance supervisory effectiveness and increase advancement potential in those employees.

The 12-hour program covers an overview of the role of the supervisor, cultural competency, leadership styles, communication skills and managing conflicts and challenges. The program will launch on June 7 and run four consecutive Monday mornings. Offered on the HCC campus, it will also be available through live synchronous distance learning at company sites. HCC invites company representatives to attend the showcase on May 3 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. by calling Robert at 552-2086 to reserve a seat. Space is limited; reservations are required.
