STCC offering photovoltaic installation course

Date: 10/10/2010

SPRINGFIELD -- As the use of alternative energy sources increases, career opportunities are expanding for those who are certified to install photovoltaic (PV) cells. The Center for Business and Technology will again offer this very popular training program that was 'sold out' during pervious terms. The program instructor, Christopher Derby Kilfoyle, is the founder and owner of Berkshire Photovoltaic Services (BPVS) of Adams, Mass. and has almost 30 years of experience in the PV field. This program is designed to prepare individuals seeking certification in this growing field. Springfield Technical Community College's (STCC) program was recently awarded accreditation by the Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC), the North American licensee for the ISPQ standard for accreditation and certification of renewable energy training programs. IREC accreditation uses the Institute for Sustainable Power Quality (ISPQ) framework of standards and metrics to ensure continuity, consistency, and quality in the delivery of training programs in the area of renewable energy.

The "photovoltaic practitioner certificate program" is designed for architects, engineers, electricians, general contractors and those interested in developing a career in photovoltaics. Curriculum development and acquisition of lab equipment was supported by a grant from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, the new home agency of the Renewable Energy Trust. Applications are now being accepted and this program is expected to be fully enrolled long before the start date.

This course will provide a comprehensive coverage of stand alone, utility interactive, and dedicated load applications for solar electricity. This program has been approved by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) and participants will receive a comprehensive preparation for the Entry Level PV Certificate of Knowledge exam offered by NABCEP as well as a detailed understanding of the types of photovoltaic (PV) cells and modules, the design of various PV direct current source circuits and their associated power electronics and switchgear. The 30kW PV system that is installed on a roof at the STCC Technology Park will be utilized for field demonstration lessons.

The college also offers a wide variety of instructor-led and web-based courses in sustainable energy weatherization installer, going green at the workplace, principles of green buildings, building analyst quick start program and many others. Details on all of these programs are available at http://cbt.stcc.edu/descriptions/ztec-018.asp or interested individuals can get details by calling 755-4502 or 755-4225.
