A new program is being offered to Massachusetts children living with asthma. This summer the American Lung Association and Astra Zeneca are teaming up to introduce Asthma Fun Day, a one-day program to educate children about their own asthma triggers, and learn safe asthma management, while enjoying a fun day inside the Springfield Marriott Hotel. On Aug. 17, 60 children with asthma, ages eight to 13 will be able to experience a day of arts and crafts, swimming, great food and asthma education. This program is free to the public, thanks to the sponsorship of Astra Zeneca and the partnership with the Springfield Marriott. If your child has asthma, it may be difficult for you to let them go away to camp for fear that they could have an attack; at the Asthma Fun Day, there will be trained nurses and respiratory therapists on hand all day long to administer medication and be there in case of an emergency. American Lung Association staff and volunteers will be running the activities and educating the children through the Open Airways program and asthma games. It is important for your child to understand their asthma, learn what their personal triggers are, and how to help themselves if they feel an attack coming on. There will also be a one-hour information session for you, the parents or guardians, held by Dr. Paul Salva, MD, PHD, a pediatric pulmonoligist, who will answer questions and help you better understand your child's condition. There are only 60 spots available, and there is no charge for this program. If you are interested, and your child is between the ages of eight and 13, contact Judy Deane at the American Lung Association by calling 737-3506 and request a registration packet. You can also request the packet online at the www.lungma.org website. The deadline to request a packet is July 13. This packet, with your child's medical information must be returned for your child to be registered to attend. Contact the American Lung Association with any questions or concerns at 800-LUNG-USA. |
