Church will offer pre-diabetes seminars starting Sept. 13 & 14

Date: 9/9/2016

AGAWAM – Have you been told you have pre-diabetes health concerns? Do you want to learn how to reverse your risk?

An upcoming free seminar hosted by Bethany Assembly of God, in partnership with Mercy Medical Center’s Faith Based Community Nursing initiative could be the help you are looking for.

“There are 86 million Americans who have pre-diabetes,” Grace Benton, faith community nurse at Bethany, said. “We need to be mindful and take ownership to prevent it. [Pre-diabetes] can be prevented with the proper lifestyle changes.”

The six-week seminar, which begins at 11 a.m. on Sept. 13 or 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 14, will address several aspects of pre-diabetes awareness.

“The program will include [presentations by] a registered dietitian, a medical doctor and a representative of the YMCA” in conjunction with a fitness plan the Y has for pre-diabetes, Benton explained. It will also include a field trip to an area Stop & Shop, where participants will receive a $10 voucher as part of the program.

All seminar meetings will take place at Bethany Assembly of God, 580 Main St. in Agawam.

Interested individuals are asked to call the church at 789-2930 to insure there is space available on the day and time of their choice.

The Bethany pre-diabetes seminars are part of Mercy Medical Center’s Faith Community Nursing outreach program, in which the hospital has reached out to churches to establish programs to help meet the needs of their community.

The program is funded through a grant obtained by Mercy Medical Center.
