JGS volunteers come together on 'Honorable Menschen Day'

LONGMEADOW -- On Christmas Day, 80 community volunteers continued the annual tradition of supporting of residents and staff of the Julian J. Leavitt Family Jewish Nursing Home and Ruth's House in Longmeadow for "Honorable Menschen Day."
Harriet Fortin, Volunteer Coordinator for Jewish Geriactric Services (JGS), explained, "'Honorable Menschen Day' brings together those willing to provide assistance in non-clinical and personal care roles to give residents some extra activity during the day, and support to staff on the holiday. 'Mensch' is a Yiddish word that describes a person who does good deeds. That is why we call it 'Honorable Menschen Day,' in tribute to our caring and dedicated volunteers."
Volunteers this year worked in the dining rooms preparing for mealtime, in the cafeteria and in housekeeping folding linens. Many led activities throughout the day, including bingo and "friendly visits;" others served as escorts to morning religious services. There was entertainment, manicures and a rolling "eyeglass washing" cart. The volunteers both Jewish and non-Jewish individuals included community members, board members, staff members, families and youth groups.
