Nugent honored as Clinician of the Year

HOLYOKE — Holyoke physician Anne Nugent, M.D. has been honored by her peers of the Hampden District Medical Society as the district's 2011 Community Clinician of the Year.

The Community Clinician of the Year Award was established in 1998 by the Massachusetts Medical Society to recognize a physician from each of the society's 20 district medical societies who has made significant contributions to patients and the community and who stands out as a leading advocate and caregiver. The Hampden District Medical Society has some 1,100 members who live and work throughout Hampden County. The award will be presented at the district society's annual meeting to be held Tuesday, May 3 at the Springfield Country Club in West Springfield.

Nugent is a board certified pediatrician practicing at the Holyoke Health Center, where she combines clinical work as the administrative team leader for pediatric care with the development of public health programming. One of her primary projects has been the La Linda Manita program, focusing on early parenting education.

A 1991 graduate of the University of Massachusetts Medical School, she completed her pediatric training at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. Following her residency, she worked for 12 years at Holyoke Pediatric Associates. During that time, she initiated the Holyoke Chapter of Reach Out and Read and served as its president for nine years.

Nugent is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and a member of AAP's Section on Community Health, and Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics. She also served as a District representative for the Mass. Chapter of the AAP from 2004 to 2006.

She received a master's in Public Health with a focus on International Health in June 2007 from the Harvard School of Public Health.

In addition to her Community Clinician of the Year award, Nugent will receive a Community Champion award from the Latino Scholarship Association of Western Massachusetts. She resides in Amherst.

The Massachusetts Medical Society, with nearly 23,000 physicians and student members, is dedicated to educating and advocating for the patients and physicians of Massachusetts.
