New Parkinson's disease support group to start

SPRINGFIELD Four years ago, David Dupont of Belchertown was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. At first, he seemed okay with the assistance of medication. But as time passed and medication was not enough, embarrassment caused him to attempt hiding his symptoms. He and his wife, Joyce, questioned what types of problems others with the disease were facing. The closest support group available was in Hadley.

Joyce felt the importance of needing support groups in the Greater Springfield area and began a support group in Wilbraham. The group still meets the second Monday of each month at 1 p.m. at the Wilbraham Senior Center, 45 Post Office Park, Suite B.

Joyce will begin a new Parkinson's support group in Springfield. It will meet at the Springfield Jewish Community Center, 1160 Dickinson Street in Springfield, the second Monday of the month, 4 6 p.m. The first meeting will be May 8.

The Massachusetts chapter of The American Parkinson's Disease Association has been the main supporter of the local groups by supplying information via newsletters, booklets and symposiums, which is also available to the public. They can be reached for more information at www.apdama.org.
