SPRINGFIELD Every lap counts at the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life of Greater Springfield. The Relay For Life of Greater Springfield's planning committee invites local cancer survivors to take part in a celebration of cancer survivorship breakfast on March 15. This special breakfast, generously sponsored by Springfield College, will be begin at 10 a.m. at Springfield College's Townhouse Conference Center, and is open to all local cancer survivors interested in learning more about the Relay For Life of Greater Springfield. The special guest speaker for this celebratory breakfast will be this year's honorary chair, Arthur Richton, of Re/Max Teamwork Realty in East Longmeadow. "The vital research and programs of the American Cancer Society are leading the way to eliminating cancer as a major health problem," said Richton. "I'm proud to participate in Relay For Life. More funds raised translate into more lives saved." Following the breakfast, team captains and any survivors interested in forming a team at the Relay are invited to stay for more information about this year's Relay. There is no cost for the breakfast but reservations are required. Anyone interested should call 734-6000, option 3 by March 11. The Relay For Life of Greater Springfield is currently seeking local residents to serve as team captains and/or team members. Relay For Life teams raise money by gathering sponsors to support their participation in the Relay. Teams of walkers keep a continuous presence on a local school track throughout the overnight event, walking in shifts to raise funds for American Cancer Society programs. The Relay For Life of Greater Springfield is a community event bringing together teams of families, friends, religious groups, neighborhoods, and businesses, all with the goal of celebrating progress in the fight against cancer, remembering those lost to cancer, and helping fund research for the future. Residents from the Greater Springfield area and surrounding towns are encouraged to attend. The American Cancer Society's 16th annual Relay For Life of Greater Springfield is set for May 30 - 31 at Springfield College. Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society's signature activity that takes place in thousands of communities nationwide.
