Siegal to speak on the art of healing

Bernie Siegel, M.D., a well-known cancer surgeon and prolific author, will speak on "The Art of Healing" at Phoenix Community Cancer Center's upcoming Survivors Day Celebration. The event, which has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years, will take place Sunday, June 4, from

2 to 4 p.m. at the Enfield Senior Center, 299 Elm Street.

As a physician, Dr. Siegel cared for and counseled innumerable people whose mortality had been threatened by illness. He embraces a philosophy of living and dying that stands at the forefront of medical ethics and spiritual issues our society grapples with today.

Dr. Siegel practiced general and pediatric surgery in New Haven and taught at Yale University for many years. In 1978, he founded ECaP (Exceptional Cancer Patients), a non-profit organization utilizing both individual and group therapy to promote the concept of integrative healing in mind, body a nd spirit. The physical, spiritual and psychological benefits experienced by those involved in the program motivated him to reach out to others, which he began to do in 1986, with the publication of his first book. His bestselling books have included, Love, Medicine & Miracles; Peace, Love & Healing and How to Live Between Office Visits. Although Dr. Siegel is now retired from his surgical practice, he continues to travel extensively, captivating audiences with his experiences and techniques.

In addition to Dr. Siegel's presentation, Survivors Day will feature an assortment of homemade desserts prepared by Baker's Fare Restaurant, free raffles and giveaways for cancer survivors and demonstrations by various local artisans. Guests will also be encouraged to join in on a special art project.

Survivors Day sponsors include Phoenix Community Cancer Center, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Community CancerCare and the Enfield Senior Center.
