Amherst to host annual apple harvest festival

AMHERST A juried crafts show and animal rides for children are among the attractions at the 21st Annual Apple Harvest Crafts Festival & Children's Fair scheduled for Sept. 29, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Amherst Town Common. The event will benefit the Amherst Family Center, a valuable community resource.

As in past years, a large variety of talented crafters will display and sell jewelry, handmade textiles and folk art, specialty foods, furniture, wooden toys and other handmade items. This year, however, Amherst's Bay St. Louis Sister City Committee will join the Amherst Family Center to host 10 crafters from Bay St. Louis, Miss. These artists from the Hurricane Katrina-ravaged region will sell their items alongside the more than 80 local area crafters.

The event features live entertainment throughout the day and food for sale from local vendors.

The Festival also includes the Third Annual Children's Fair, with hayrides, pony rides, a petting zoo, scarecrow building, pumpkin decorating, and a bouncy castle, plus many craft activities for all ages.

All proceeds from the Apple Harvest and Crafts Festival benefit the Amherst Family Center, a non-sectarian drop-in center for parents, grandparents, caregivers and their children, birth to age five. The Family Center, located in the basement of the Unitarian Meeting House, 121 North Pleasant St., provides parent education workshops, cultural activities and warm, friendly, professionally staffed playrooms for children. Major Apple Harvest Crafts & Children's Festival sponsors include Atkins Farms Country Market, "The Hampshire Gazette" and "Amherst Bulletin," and the University of Massachusetts Housing, Food Services, and Auxiliary Services.
