Armory offers free tours and programs

SPRINGFIELD Enjoy two new programs at Springfield Armory National Historic Site. Through Aug. 26, two new interpretive tours will be offered each weekend day. At 10 a.m., explore the historic buildings and grounds. Discover the historical uses of present day Springfield Technical Community College buildings. At 2 p.m., the museum exhibits tour will focus on distilling the story of Armory manufacturing and the evolution of firearms. Tours will last approximately 45 minutes. Call 734-8551 to sign up, admission is free.

At 10 a.m., interpretive tours will take visitors behind the scenes to an earlier time. Hear about the soldiers from the War of 1812, buried on the grounds. Find out why the former Armory buildings are now part of Springfield Technical Community College.

At 2 p.m., Rangers will show and tell visitors about the notable exhibits. Find out what the meaning is of the "Organ of Muskets" exhibit. Tour leaders will introduce visitors to Armory inventors and inventions such as the Blanchard Lathe and Lyle Life Saving Gun.
