By Debbie Gardner PRIME Editor I still remember my first cookbook, a slim, well-thumbed paperback passed on to me by Mrs. Malikowski, the nice lady who lived across the street from us. And I remember the first recipe I ever tried Quick-As-A-Blink Fudge and my surprise at how long it took to make something! That fudge recipe ( which I still make) was followed by a stab at Porcupine Meatballs, various cakes and cookies, a valiant try at petit fores in my teens ... I think I can probably trace my love of cooking back to that battered cookbook. Cooking connected me to my grandmothers I spent time with both learning to make their specialties and with my Mom especially when we made those petit fores (belated thanks, Mom, for all your patience!) Cooking together is a great way to connect as a family, to discover a child's hidden interests and talents, and to pass on a life skill. It doesn't matter what you start with fudge or cookies, or the Brownie Bites recipe below, taken from the Pampered Chef's(r) new "Let's Eat!" kids cookbook. When you spend time in the kitchen together, you're making more than a recipe. You're making memories that endure. P.S. These brownies are also great for bake sales, kids club meetings, and classroom treats! S'More Brownie Bites From The Pampered Chef(r)'s 'Lets Eat! ' cookbook for children Ingredients: 1 package (10.25 ounces) fudge brownie mix 1/4 cup vegetable oil 1 egg 2 tablespoons water 1/3 cup milk chocolate chips 1 cup mini marshmallows 48 bear-shaped graham snacks Method: 1. Mix with the Bamboo Spoon about 50 times. The batter will be a little lumpy. Using the Small Scoop (1 tbs.), put 1 scoop of batter into each muffin cup. Each cup should be about 1/2 full. 3. With adult help: Bake the brownie cups for 13 to 14 minutes or until the edges of the brownie cups are set. Using Oven Mitts, carefully remove the pan from the oven and put it on a cooling rack. Gently press about 5 chocolate chips, 3 mini marshmallows and 2 bear graham snacks in each brownie cup. Let the brownie cups cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then remove them from the pan. Enjoy! Makes 24 brownie bites Helpful Hint: When the brownie bites are completely cool, put them in a plastic container and cover them with the lid.
