Golf tourney will benefit Womanshelter/Companeras

SOUTH HADLEY Womanshelter/Companeras is holding a miniature golf tournament on June 4, at Stony Falls Mini-Golf at McCray's Farm in South Hadley from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This family-oriented event will raise funds to support the children's program at Womanshelter/Compaeras.

The Mini-Golf Tournament is the first of what Womanshelter/Compaeras hopes will become a yearly tradition similar to the annual billiards tournament and motorcycle poker run. These events are designed to be fun for particular audiences as well as successful fundraisers. "Mini-golf is the perfect family event because children of all ages can participate," organizer Maryellen Riemenschneider, a member of the Womanshelter/Compaeras Board of Directors, said.

"It also draws attention to the needs of our families in shelter," she added, noting that the organization sheltered 132 children last year ranging in age from newborn to teen.

The goal is to raise $2,500 and funds will be used to purchase clothing, school supplies, and arts and craft supplies for children, and resources for both children and mothers.

The cost is $10 per person before June 4 and $12.00 the day of the event. This includes mini-golf, a home-made McCray's creamery ice cream, and the chance to participate in various contests and raffles.

A rain date of June 5 has been scheduled. Groups can sign up for a tee-time between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. by calling Womanshelter/Compaeras at 538-9717. Sponsors are also needed and can contact Melinda Thomas at 538-9717 for more information.
