Mercy Medical Center offering 'Safe Sitter' class for 11 - 13 year olds

SPRINGFIELD Girls and boys ages 11 to 13 can become better babysitters by enrolling in a "Safe Sitter" class sponsored by the Family Life Center for Maternity at Mercy Medical Center, 271 Carew St., Springfield. This one-day class will take place April 21 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Participants will learn about situations they may encounter while babysitting and receive hands-on practice in basic life-saving techniques that will prepare them to act in a crisis. Safety and security precautions will be covered, such as what to do if a stranger comes to the door and when and how to call for help.

Basic childcare skills including diapering and feeding will also be taught, along with information on child care development and age-appropriate activities. Additionally, instruction on the business aspects of babysitting will be provided.

To successfully complete the "Safe Sitter" program, students must pass both written and practical tests demonstrating they have mastered the information and skills required to respond in an emergency.

A $30 fee covers the cost of the program and includes a course manual. Class size is limited and advanced registration is required. To register, or for more information, call the Family Life Center for Maternity's Parenting Education Department at 748-7295.
