SPRINGFIELD The MSPCA Animal Care and Adoption Center is in need of foster care volunteers for animals awaiting adoption. This life-saving opportunity to help animals in a home on a temporary basis may include but is not limited to mom cats with underage kittens; kittens and small animals (guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits and more) in need of socialization; and dogs that would benefit from the quiet routine of a home environment rather than a busy and often noisy kennel environment. Foster care stays typically range anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. Anyone interested is invited to attend the MSPCA's Foster Care Volunteer Orientation on Oct. 16 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the facility on Union Street in Springfield. More information is available by calling 736-2992 or online at www.mspca.org. *** The MSPCA Animal Care and Adoption Center offers two ways to help protect pets with a low cost rabies vaccination and microchip clinic on Oct. 18 from 9 a.m. to noon at the facility located at 171 Union St. in Springfield. Rabies vaccinations for dogs and cats are required by law in Massachusetts. This clinic offers a rabies vaccination, certificate and tag. Owners with a previous rabies certificate are asked to bring it to the clinic. Rabies vaccinations protect cats and dogs from the deadly rabies virus which is spread through the saliva of an infected animal. Rabies is a fatal disease with no cure. Only mammals get rabies and it kills almost any animal or human who gets sick from it. Microchipping is a safe, simple and permanent form of pet identification designed to quickly identify lost pets and reunite them with their family. Statistically, more than 10 million pets become lost each year. One out of every three pets will get lost in its lifetime but only one in 10 is found. Nearly 100 percent of pets with a microchip are successfully reunited with their families. Cost of the rabies vaccination is $10; microchip is $25. Pet owners may opt for one or both services at the clinic. Dogs must be on leash, cats in carriers. No appointment necessary. |
