New choral season begins at CMSS

Date: 9/15/2009

SPRINGFIELD The Community Music School of Springfield's choral program for children and young people is beginning its new season on Monday afternoons under the leadership of two talented and spirited choral directors. Richard Matteson and Laura Williams return to the faculty this year in an exciting program schedule which includes an appearance with the Springfield Symphony Orchestra in December. The entire year's schedule promises new repertoire and performance opportunities to delight young singers.

Laura Williams directs the CMSS Allegro Chorus for grades one through four. Singers in grades three and four meet for 75 minutes, while those in grades one and two meet for 45 minutes early Monday evenings. Richard Matteson directs the Vivace Chorus for grades five through 12. Vivace also meets on Monday evenings for 90 minutes.

Each chorus is for both boys and girls according to age. Students learn musical skills and become musically literate as they explore a variety of international music, languages and musical styles. Fees range from $6 per class to $10 depending on the length of the class, payable monthly.

Richard Matteson is a graduate of the Hartt School of Music where he studied voice and vocal conducting, as well as organ. He is well known to southern New England audiences as the organist and choir director for several greater Springfield and Hartford churches. He has also taught in school settings during his distinguished career.

Laura Williams earned her Bachelor and Master's Degrees from UConn and her Kodaly certification from the Hartt School of Music. Mrs. Williams has been a member of the CMSS faculty for several years and is known for her wonderful international repertoire.

Three choral recitals throughout the year have been scheduled, as well as additional community appearances to be announced.
