Rachel's Table "Food Raiser"

Date: 11/21/2011

SPRINGFIELD — Do you consider yourself a savvy shopper? Join Rachel’s Table for a shopping contest on Dec. 4 at the Longmeadow Big Y, from 10 a.m. to noon. Now in its fifth year, the “Food-raiser” is a friendly competition in which shoppers try to buy the most food for the least money. All the food that is purchased will be donated directly to Providence Ministries and Open Pantry. The “Food-raiser,” originally scheduled for Nov. 6, had to be postponed due to the Nor’easter on Oct. 29.

Although the store’s director, Bob McGoldrick, had his hands full trying to meet the needs of the Longmeadow community, he was eager to reschedule the much-anticipated event. Shortly after the store’s power came back on, the Big Y had already chosen a new date for the “Food-raiser.”

Participants don’t need much time or money to make a big difference. Stop by for 20 minutes or a half hour and purchase several items — every purchase helps.

Specifics pertaining to the competition are as follows:
  • Teams of one to four people will compete to save the most money using coupons, Big Y specials and Big Y coins.

  • $5 entrance fee includes a T-shirt. Entrance fees are tax-deductible contributions to Rachel’s Table.

  • Prizes will be awarded for the most money saved in various categories.
