Sarno to kick off Caribbean week on Aug. 13

SPRINGFIELD -- On Aug. 13 there will be a proclamation of Caribbean Week by Mayor Domenic Sarno on the steps of City Hall at 1:30 p.m.

Gov. Deval Patrick is scheduled to attend. This will be followed by the Taste of Caribbean Food. People of Caribbean descent are urged to be present and bring their native flags.

On Aug. 14 at 5 p.m. there will be a gospel concert at the Karen Sprague Cultural Center at American International College.

Several local artists including Dr. Lovelace, local church choirs, Evenus Thompson, Elder Willie Naylor, the Caribbean Folk Singers, Center Stage Dance Academy, and Pastor Derrick Samms will appear. Cost is $10 per person.

On Aug. 19 there will be a fashion/talent show at Rebecca Johnson School, located at 55 Catharine St. at 7 p.m. Cost is $10 per person. The public is invited.

On Aug. 21 the Trinidad Style Carnival Parade will kick-off at 1 p.m. from State and Catharine streets.

The parade will travel up State Street to Blunt Park. There will be people dressed in colorful carnival costumes, floats, Soca music, a steel band, elected officials, Buffalo soldiers, a motorcycle group, a Native American group and many more. There will be vendors, entertainment and ethnic food at Blunt Park.
