Storrowtown village celebrates Maple Harvest Day with sugary fun

Maple Harvest Day will again be celebrated at Storrowton Village Museum and Storrowton Tavern exploring New England maple sugaring March 11 from noon to 4 p.m. on the Eastern States Exposition grounds in West Springfield, Mass. The event is free and open to the public.

Storrowton Village Museum Director Dennis Picard will speak on the history and legend of maple sugaring, which has been a practice in Massachusetts since before the Pilgrims arrived. Ongoing demonstrations take place in the front yard of Gilbert Farmstead with sugar maple tree tapping, sumac spile making and sap boiling over an open fire.

Inside the cozy home in the Village, demonstrations of fireplace cooking at the hearth as well as basket weaving and wool spinning demonstrations will take place. A selection of gifts and maple-themed items from the Storrowton Village Gift Shop will be available adjacent to the Gilbert House.

Guests are invited across the green to enjoy a warming lunch at Storrowton Tavern featuring traditional New England foods. The special, one day maple-themed menu features a choice of Roast Turkey with Cranberry Maple Chutney, Yankee Pot Roast or Maple Glazed Salmon. The meal also includes a Maple Vinaigrette Salad, Maple-laced Butternut Squash and New England Baked Beans with Maple, served family style. A basket of traditional New England breads will be served with maple butter, and dessert will be a Maple Walnut Brownie topped with ice cream and Massachusetts maple syrup. The children's entree will be a choice of Chicken Fingers with Maple Honey Mustard or the Roast Turkey entree. An array of warming beverages will be available including "Sap Gatherers Cider," created just for Maple Harvest Day.

The luncheon is priced at $19.95 for adults and $9.95 for children. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the educational programs at Storrowton Village Museum.
