Symphony Youth Orchestra to conduct auditions Aug. 23

SPRINGFIELD — The Springfield Symphony Youth Orchestra (SYO), celebrating its 68th anniversary during the 2011-2012 season, is looking for talented young musicians.

The youth orchestra is composed of two merit-based ensembles: SYO, an advanced orchestra that cultivates standard orchestral repertoire; and Springfield Youth Sinfonia (SYS) an introductory orchestra that develops ensemble skills. The two ensembles consist of more than 140 young musicians from over 40 communities in Massachusetts and Connecticut.

There are vacancies in both orchestras for the 2011-12 Season for the following instruments: SYS (viola, string bass, oboe, bassoon, French horn, trombone, tuba, and percussion); SYO (violin, viola, string bass, French horn, trombone, and tuba).

Auditions will take place at Holyoke Community College on Aug. 23 by appointment only.
