Visit the Turners Falls Fishway with your family

Visitors to the Turners Falls Fishway can witness anadromous fish (fish that hatch in freshwater, migrate to the sea to feed and mature, and then return, as adults, to the rivers of their birth to spawn) migrating to upstream spawning sites on the Connecticut River. Viewing windows put visitors at eye level with migrating fish including bizarre-looking, three-foot sea lamprey and nearly two foot-long, green-gold American shad. Last year 15,798 sea lamprey and 1,500 American shad, five Atlantic salmon, and two blueback herring were counted at the Fishway.

The Turners Falls Fishway is just downstream of the Barton Cove bald eagle nestwhich visitors can scan with a telescope available on-site. The Fishway is also equipped with a live-solar powered camera feed of the eagle nestthrough a joint effort of Northeast Utilities, the US fish and Wildlife Service, and the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, and there is also video tape about eagle restoration efforts, shown to visitors upon request.
