SPRINGFIELD The 9th Annual Western New England College Girls and Women in Sports Day is scheduled for Feb. 16 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Alumni Healthful Living Center on the college's main campus. The free event is a community service program designed for girls between the ages of seven and 12 from the Greater Springfield area. Participants are asked to bring a personal hygiene product (hair products, deodorant, toothpaste, paper towels, etc.). Items will be donated to a local domestic violence shelter. To register or for more information, visit www.wnec.edu/athletics or call 796-2229. Girls and Women in Sports Day is celebrated nationally to promote the participation of females in athletics. "The student-athletes and coaches at Western New England College are ecstatic to host this day on our campus," said Jennifer Kolins, the college's Men's and Women's Tennis Coach and Community Outreach Coordinator. "Our focus is not only teaching athletic skills but to also encourage a life-long interest in sport and physical activity, make healthy life choices, strengthen self esteem and introduce a variety of sports to girls from Springfield and surrounding areas." Participants will have the opportunity to select two sport clinics: basketball, softball, volleyball, lacrosse, soccer and dance. Clinics will be instructed by Western New England College coaches and varsity athletes and include both instruction and time for play. In addition, recreation time will be made available for swimming, racquetball and squash. A complimentary lunch will be served. All participants and their families are invited to remain at the Alumni Healthful Living Center and attend at no charge the Western New England College women's basketball game at 1 p.m. and the men's basketball game at 3 p.m. |
