SOUTHAMPTON – Women living or working in the Pioneer Valley are encouraged to submit images for the 13th annual juried Women in History Month Photo Exhibit presented by the Robert Floyd Photo Gallery and Learning Center.
“We invite any woman, age 13 and older, living in Franklin, Hampden or Hampshire counties to submit up to four portraits of women,” Robert Floyd said during an interview with Reminder Publications. “Female subjects may live anywhere in the world.”
This year’s theme is “Human Emotion” and the photographer’s images must be captured in the 21st century.
“Please encourage a woman photographer, novice, advanced, or professional, to help us celebrate women now,” he said appealing to the public.
Jurors for this year’s show are Barbara Krawczyk of Westfield, Maggie Horsnell of South Hadley, and Judy Cummings of West Deerfield.
“Our seasoned jurors have won awards in The Gallery’s previous Women in History Month photo exhibits as well as Nature in the Pioneer Valley photo contests,” Floyd said.
Krawczyk, president of the Westfield Camera Club, encourages women to enter the competition since it is a “very creative outlet” to portray the story of life of a woman of any age, living or passed, depicting the theme of human emotion.
“For a woman photographer the exhibit provides an opportunity to show off their talent both in photojournalism and in the media of photography and printing,” Krawczyk said. “It is a fitting tribute to Women in History Month, and secondary is the great monetary and merchant awards for the winners.”
Images can be film or digital, color or black and white, with a maximum of four entries per participant. Image sizes are between 8” x 10” and 11” x 17”, then mounted/matted/framed with wire/cord for hanging not to exceed 18” x 24”.
Awards include $300 for Best in Show, and a first and second place Merchant Award for each novice, advanced and professional category.
Thirty-seven images will be selected for the exhibit and the seven winning entries will remain on exhibit through April 29. Artwork will not be available for sale.
Framed images should be delivered to the gallery at 2 East St. on Route 10 on either March 9, 11, 15, 16, 18 or 22 from 1 to 6 p.m.
Floyd notes that if these times are not convenient for participants to contact him at 529-2635 to make other arrangements.
The group photo exhibit will be staged March 22 through April 19 with a closing reception on April 12 from 5 to 8 p.m. Refreshments will be served including wine, cider and cheese.
Floyd noted that Artist Gallery Conversation Receptions will be offered March 23, 30, and April 6 at 3 p.m., when women exhibitors can tell their story and those stories of their women subjects.
The annual awards presentation is slated April 13 at 3 p.m.
Sponsors of the photo exhibit at press time include Big Red Frame Custom Framing of Easthampton and Pivot Media of Florence.
“Robert’s is a singularly fine gallery to be associated with and this theme is one dear to his heart, being his longest running contest exhibit,” Krawczyk said.
Krawczyk encouraged women to also consider joining a camera club to learn valuable photographic techniques and the latest on digital processing software.
“A camera club provides a very economic, non-threatening way for people to learn about cameras and the like,” she said. “Joining provides another social connection for women, to make friends from all walks of life and all ages and to provide leadership opportunities.”
For Krawczyk, competitions also allow her to improve her skills.
“Only practice, curiosity and challenging yourself will make one a better photographer,” she said. “Photography is my creative outlet and is a wonderful hobby for women.”
