CHICOPEE — Dennis King, president and owner of King Ward Coach Lines, wants to give back to the community and, thanks to the generosity of his customers, will make going back to school a little easier for some Chicopee students.

Ward delivered 15 bins of school supplies to the School Department offices on Broadway on Sept. 1 that will be used to help children living in shelters who attended city schools, School Superintendent Richard Rege said.

King explained that his company has been in Chicopee for the past five years and has been pleased with its reception in the city.

The company had never undertaken an effort to help the city’s students and King explained customers were asked to donate school supplies in exchange for a $5 discount.

He noted that many customers brought in more than one item, despite only receiving one discount.

“People have been very generous,” King said.

In the past year, King Ward Coach Lines has run drives to help Lorraine’s Soup Kitchen and collected items for the USO of the Pioneer Valley to be sent to military personnel overseas.

Currently, the company is asking it customers to donate personal care items that can be given to the Holyoke Soldiers’ Home.
