By G. Michael Dobbs Managing Editor CHICOPEE "It's the best thing you can do provide a photo," John Bish said. Bish and his wife Magi told a meeting of city officials that in 2000 they did not have a current photo of their daughter Molly to aid the police when she was abducted. In the wake of their tragedy Molly's remains were found in 2003 the Bishs formed the Molly Bish Lifeguard Foundation to promote child safety. The couple was in Chicopee last week to publicize an upcoming child identification day. American Insurance Agency will be hosting a Molly Bish Foundation Child Safety ID Day on Sept. 30 at the agency's 510 Front St. offices from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each child will receive an ID kit with their photograph and fingerprints and a safety booklet. Families from throughout the area are encouraged to participate. There will be complimentary food, beverages and entertainment along with free prize drawings. "It makes all the sense in the world to protect the ones who are the most vulnerable by giving local authorities the best opportunity at finding and identifying a child who's missing and endangered. We're very pleased to be working with the Molly Bish Foundation for this event," Corey Murphy, vice president of First American Insurance, said. John said that 116,000 children now have the ID booklets from the Foundation. He added the booklets are also valuable for families with senior who are suffering from dementia as many of them can wander from their homes. Magi said the couple "needs to give parent a plan" to deal with emergencies. "By telling Molly's story, we hope to make a difference," Magi said. John said the blue and yellow booklet is brightly colored so it can be easily found. He added the Foundation will be putting a new page in the booklet on Internet safety and is consulting with medical and law enforcement authorities about adding a DNA component to the booklet. "God willing, no one is going to use these books, but they will be prepared," John said. For more information on child safety log onto www.mollybisg.org. |
