CHICOPEE Organizers of the official kick-off to the Christmas season have promised this year's event will be larger than ever.

Taking place Dec. 5 at City Hall, the lighting of the city's Christmas tree will be one of the many activities offered that night.

From 4 to 7 p.m. the former city library will be the site of "Santa's Workshop" with the following features:

There will be holiday crafts for children at The Art Studio at the corner of Exchange and Springfield streets. The Chicopee Comp High School and Holyoke Catholic Chorals will provide Christmas music.

Big Y Foods will provide refreshment and cakes and the City Library, the Parks and Recreation Department, Chicopee Electric Light, J. Polep and Elms College donated items for goodie bags.

Entertainment will begin at 5:30 at City Hall with the performance of Christmas carols by Chicopee Girl Scouts, followed at 5:45 p.m. with a demonstration by the Shaolin Kung Fu Academy. Santa will arrive at 6 p.m. and the tree will be lit at 6:15 p.m.

All of the events are free of charge.
