Church plans inspirational program

CHICOPEE We all have "hidden potential" and an inspirational evening planned Sept. 19 by members of the Pioneer Valley Church of Christ may help some local women unlock that secret.

For 15 years, the women of the church have put together an annual event to encourage area women to consider their special place in God's heart, according to Ja'Net Smith of Chicopee, a member of the event planning committee.

"I believe that area women should attend this event because it will truly be a night of spiritual inspiration," Smith said during an interview with Reminder Publications. "It is great to have a night out with women who are willing to share openly about their lives, struggles and victories, as they pursue their own walks with God."

Florence Schachinger, founder of My Cup Runneth Over, a company specializing in children's tea parties, is the keynote speaker for the 7 to 9 p.m. event titled "Hidden Potential: A Night of Spiritual Inspiration for Women." Pre-registration is required to attend the evening program. The cost is $15 for women and $10 for teens and college-age women.

Schachinger was chosen as this year's speaker because of her diverse background which includes serving full-time in the ministry for the International Churches of Christ, as well as singing and dancing in New York City's theater when time allows. Her husband Jeff is a minister for the Southern Connecticut Church of Christ, and they have three children, ages eight, 17 and 20.

"We chose Florence because the work she does fits into our theme," Smith said.

Schachinger's presentation will center on learning to look at oneself through God's eyes, according to Smith.

"As a college student I felt the struggle to find and keep my faith particularly challenging and always found these events to motivate and encourage me to continue on my personal journey," Smith added.

Smith noted that the program is appropriate for women and their teenage daughters.

The evening will begin with an elegant buffet of desserts, light hors d'oeuvres and beverages. A few "special desserts" are also being prepared by some of the culinary gifted members, according to Smith.

Prior to Schachinger's presentation, Smith said there will be some comedy, a video presentation, an interpretive dance and a chance to view artwork by members of the church in the art gallery.

"The idea behind the art gallery was to allow all members to use their own hidden gifts or potential to make the night a success," Smith said. "Some women have a gift of singing, dancing, public speaking, while others are talented artistically. We want each member to be able to contribute to the night in their own ways and through their own gifts thus revealing their own hidden potential."

Smith noted that the program will be from a Christian perspective since that is the faith the church members ascribe to, but women of all faiths are "welcomed and encouraged" to attend the program. Following Schachinger's presentation, Smith said that attendees can expect a few surprises to wrap up the evening's affair.
