CHICOPEE — A host of parishioners from First Central Baptist will open the trunks of their cars for a unique Halloween event called "Trunk or Treat" on the early evening of Oct. 31.

"This is a family event and is open to anyone who chooses to come out," Sue Ann Jarvis, organizer of the annual affair, said.

Jarvis noted during an interview with Reminder Publications that she hopes parents take advantage of this free opportunity to have fun with their children (ages 12 and younger) from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

"We do not limit who can attend the event and our desire is to be a light on the corner of Broadway to our neighborhood," she said.

Instead of the traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating, a host of decorated cars will have their trunks open so that after a child says "Trick-or-Treat," they will receive their candy.

"Trunk or Treat allows the children in our neighborhood the ability to participate in Halloween in a fun and safe way," Jarvis said. "Most of the families in our area are familiar with our church because of the various programs that we offer."

Small Smiles Dentists in Holyoke has also made a donation of 200 toothbrushes to be distributed to children that evening.

"We will have seasonal refreshments to warm the experience," Jarvis said, noting that coffee, hot chocolate and doughnuts are always popular with the participants.

For families concerned with traffic, a police officer will be located at the crosswalk to assist families who will be crossing the street.

"If there is significant rain we will cancel or end early," she said.
