CHICOPEE Building Commissioner Joseph Viamari has secured a building at 5 Zoar Ave. and is in the process of trying to find the heirs of the owners of the building.

He explained to the Chicopee Herald that the owner of record is deceased. The city needs to find out what the current owners of the property intend to do with it either repair or demolish it.

Viamari inspected the building on July 14 and then secured the building on July 15.

The city's attention to the building was brought about by a police report filed by patrolmen Jan Wegrzynek on July 6. Wegrzynek wrote that he was dispatch to address a report of children entering the building and turning on the water.

"Upon arrival I noticed that 5 Zoar Ave, is a three family brick structure. As I approached I noticed five unregistered vehicles. I spoke to a neighbor at 7 Zoar Ave, who stated the owner had died two years ago. He also states that no one has lived there since the owner died. The front door of the building had a pad lock securing it.

"As I walked down the driveway I noticed numerous stray cats in many stages of life from kittens to adults running in and out of the garage.

"I next went into the rear of the building and the first floor door was missing. The floor in the kitchen was cover with debris. The inside looked like it had been vandalized. I was unable to check the whole apartment due to the unsafe flooring. I also could not check the remaining floors for the same reason due to the structure being unsafe."

Wegrzynek contacted Viamari and forwarded his report to the Health Department.
