Committee gears up for 2008 Chicopee Colleen Contest

CHICOPEE Applications for the 2008 Chicopee Colleen Contest will be available beginning on Jan. 7 at the six locations: Chicopee Comprehensive High School, Cathedral High School, Chicopee High School, Elms College, Holyoke Catholic High School and Chicopee Chamber of Commerce.

This year will be the Chicopee Contingents fifty-forth year participating in the Holyoke St. Patrick's Day Parade. The Chicopee Parade Committee is responsible each and every year for organizing and coordinating Chicopee's contingent comprised of many other participating units who will march in the Holyoke Parade. The Chicopee Committee also designs, creates and builds the Chicopee Colleen Float, which the Chicopee's chosen Colleen and Court ride on in the Holyoke St. Patrick's Day Parade every year. The Committee holds the Chicopee Colleen Contest at their annual Ball. The 2008 Colleen Coronation Ball will take place March 15.

The committee will only accept the Official Colleen Contest applications entered before the deadline date of Feb. 23. Any questions or additional information regarding the contest, please contact Eileen Kelly at 594-5850.

Every Colleen contestant who participates in the 2008 Chicopee Colleen Contest will be eligible to apply for a Parade Committee scholarship, which will be awarded later in the year by the Chicopee by the Chicopee Parade Committee. The Parade Committee awarded $3,000 in scholarships during the 2007 contest year and hope to award around the same amount this year.

The committee is also encouraging any members of the community that would want to become a member of the committee write their name with a contact telephone number and mail it to the Chicopee Parade Committee P.O. Box 495, Chicopee, MA 01020. A member will contact you to make arrangements for membership.

The 2008 elected Officers for the Chicopee Parade Committee are as follows: President Elin Gaynor, Vice President John Beaileau, Secretary Dan O'Reilly and Treasurer Timothy O'Shea.
