CHICOPEE -- For the first time in the city s history, senior citizens won't have to bring their bulk garbage items, such as unwanted furniture and appliances, to the city s landfill. Starting this week, seniors will be able to make free appointments for curbside pick-ups of items.

Residents aged 65 and older can make appointments by calling 594-3557. The city will allow the pick-up of five items per appointment and two appointments during a one year.

Seniors will be responsible for bringing their items to the curb for pick-up. Among the items that will be accepted are mattresses and box springs, televisions, computer monitors and other electronics, propane tanks, refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners.

Mayor Michael Bissonnette said the service is due in part to the refurbishing of a bulk pick-up truck. The renovations cost the city $9,000 as opposed to $45,000 a new vehicle would have cost.

Bissonnette added the service will use existing Department of Public Works staff members.
