Gold Club seeking approvals to open

CHICOPEE The former Gold Club on Shawnigan Drive may be back in business in the coming months, but not before permission is granted from several agencies. Approval is needed from the Board of Alderman, and License Commission, among others.

Aldermanic President Keith Rattel said the applicants need two special permits to run the Gold Club as an adult entertainment venue: a special license for an "eating and drinking place with the consumption of alcohol with live entertainment," and a special permit for an "adult club." He said the club would also need a common victuallers license.

Rattel said applications have been denied in the past, but a court decision said the city had to issue the permits.

"We're being careful not to comment too much," Rattel said.

A public hearing is scheduled on the matter for Feb 28 at 7 p.m.

"The city's position is to comply with the law," Mayor Michael Bissonnette said. "There's little the city can do if it's legitimately licensed."

He said the location was open as a juice bar two years ago, but there was a problem with people bringing in their own alcohol.

Bissonnette also said the city is going to do everything they can as far as the ordinance is concerned, "to make sure the activity doesn't go into the neighborhoods."

Bill Pagel, president of the License Commission, said the Gold club has not taken any paper out to get a license from the commission.

A liquor license granted by the city would also be subject to the approval of the state.
