CHICOPEE Ronald Belair of 506 Britton Street officially announced his campaign for Ward 9 Alderman last week.

An employee of the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority, the 44-year old has served on the city's License Commission since 1988.

Belair said that his decision to seek a position on the Board of Alderman is "something he's been thinking about for quite some time."

As someone who has been involved in the city for the past seven years, and has been involved in politics his entire life, Belair said that he is hoping to "bring another strong voice to the Board."

"I am seeking this position because I believe that I can make a difference n continuing to move Ward 9 in a positive direction," he said.

He explained that as a longtime resident of the Fairview area, he is very familiar with the needs and priorities of the area.

He said that his position on the License Commission renders him well-prepared for being in a position to make difficult decisions.

"I'm very strong-minded and strong-willed, and I'm not afraid to address any of the challenges I might face as an alderman.

According to Britton, his involvement in the community, including his 25 years as a members of the Fairview Knights of Columbus Council 4044, demonstrates his commitment to the community.

In addition to his involvement with the Knights of Columbus, Britton is also a charter member of the Fairview 4th Degree Assembly, and has served as Treasurer and Chief Financial Office for the past 12 years for the Castle of Knights Banquet Facility.

One of Belair's chief concerns is the city's finances.

He said that while he is pleased with the city's progress in recent years, he is concerned about the city's recent authorization to borrow $17 million for the new Chicopee Comprehensive High School.

He said that while he supports the construction of the school, he believes that the issue deserves further scrutiny.

"I just want to make sure that we're always taking a good look at our expenses and are allocating money to the right places," he said.

As the city faces difficult economic times, he said he believes his experience would be a benefit to the city.

He said he will work to be a strong voice for sound local tax policy, and that the people of Ward 9 receive "first rate city services for the taxes that they pay."

Belair also expressed his commitment to a "first-class education" system for the citizens of Chicopee, as well as his concern for the needs of senior citizens.

He added that he will advocate for establishing a new branch of the Chicopee Public Library in Ward 9, and will also work hard to ensure that road and sidewalk improvements continue.
