news@thereminder.comCHICOPEE Ward 1 School Committee member Adam Lamontagne has announced his intention to step down at the completion of his current terms.
He sent the press the following statement this week: "I'm announcing that I will not seek re-election to a fourth term on the Chicopee School Committee. After consulting with my family and friends, I decided it is the appropriate time to explore other options. It has been a wonderful experience serving the people of Ward 1 on the Chicopee School Committee for over half a decade."
He added, "I'm proud of all the accomplishments:
•Consistently balancing the School Budget without cuts to staff or programs.
•Effectively handling the school accreditation matters.
•Championing more effective and less costly Special Education Programs.
•Advocating to expand the Career Tech Program to meet the job needs of the 21st century.
•Reducing school dropout rate to best numbers in a decade.
•Being a voice for sound fiscal responsibility for financial accountability."
Lamontagne first made the announcement on his Facebook page on Feb. 24. He is also the School Committees liaison to the City Council.
Speaking to
Reminder Publications, Lamontagne said he was making the announcement now so prospective candidates have the time to organize their campaigns.
He did not state a particular reason spurring his decision.
Whether or not he runs for office gain, he could not say.
"Right now I'm going to look at other options to see what to do," he said.
Lamontagne is a student at Westfield State University majoring in political science, with a concentration in public administration. He will be graduating in May 2014.
He said he would miss the other members of the committee as well as the school personnel with whom he has worked.
"I want to thank my constituents again from Ward 1. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve them," he added.
