Maloney memorial planned

CHICOPEE City officials and volunteers met last Thursday to begin planning a Memorial Day Parade that will honor the late Captain John Maloney.

Maloney, a 1986 graduate of Chicopee High School, was killed while serving in Iraq in 2005. The athletic fields at the new Chicopee High School will be dedicated to him in ceremonies following the parade on May 27.

Del Barabani is heading the group that includes representatives from various city departments, the St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee, the United States Air Force, among others.

Barabani predicted the parade would be three times the normal size for the city's annual Memorial Day observation. He anticipates 10 floats and four to five bands at this time. The Quaboag Highlanders Pipes and Drums have committed to play in the parade and at the dedication.

The committee members are finalizing efforts to secure a speaker for the event and other parade participants.

Questions about the parade should be directed to Ken Golash, the city's veteran's agent, at 594-3470.
