Mayor signs contract, sewer work could begin soon

CHICOPEE - Mayor Michael Bissonnette signed contracts last week that will allow the start of two major construction projects in the city.

Both projects address the federal mandate for the city to fix Combined Sewer Overflows (CSO) that can send raw swage into the Connecticut River.

Fixing the CSOs in the north Fairview area is a project that will affect 45 streets in that neighborhood and carries a cost of $17 million.

The other project is a new water treatment facility on Jones Ferry Road and will cost $13 million.

Bissonnette said that members of the Department of Public Works were meeting with the contractor and representatives of utilities to lay out a work plan for the next two years.

The city has spent $2 million in design and preparation costs so far. The projects are being funded through the loan project with a two percent interest rate.

Bissonnette anticipated the construction will begin sometime within a week.

"North Fairview is going to be torn up and will be inconvenient for the next two years," he said.
