Mayor, tots celebrate lunch in the parksJuly 7, 2010CHICOPEE -- Now in its 23rd year, the Free Lunch in the Parks program is available to every school-aged child through age 18 in Chicopee. It runs from June 28 through Aug. 20 this year and is sponsored by Chicopee Public Schools and the Valley Opportunity Council. According to Joanne Lennon, the school department director of food services, the summer food service program feeds approximately 3,000 young people a day. About 50 percent of the school population qualifies for free or reduced-fee lunch during the school year, so it is vital that children continue to receive a nutritious meal through the Summer Food Program. It is being offered at the following parks: Rivers, Wisniowski, Sarah Jane and Lincoln Grove parks. For more information, please call the food service department at 594-3453. |
