Moose plan cruise nights at Family Center

CHICOPEE Car enthusiasts and car collectors can share their memories and swap advice at the weekly "Cruise Nights" hosted by the Moose Family Center.

On Thursdays now through Sept. 21, Moose members welcome owners of cars, trucks, motorcycles and low riders, as well as spectators, from 6 to 9 p.m.

"Show quality cars" is how Dan Summers, chairperson of this year's Cruise Nights, describes the types of vehicles that are on view on most Thursday evenings.

"We welcome all makes and models," said Summers during an interview with Reminder Publications.

There is no cost for participants to display their classic cars and the Moose Family Center has ample parking available since they can accommodate up to 400 vehicles. Each week, judges award first, second and third place trophies to the best cars on the lot, as well as a "best in show" award.

Summers stressed that Cruise Nights can also be a fun night out for families since the center has a playground and a host of refreshments are available.

"Cruise Nights have a good mix of all ages," said Summers, adding that up to 400 people attend on an average Thursday evening.

Moose members serve up hamburgers, hot dogs, sausage grinders, popcorn chicken, onion rings and French fries.

Persons attending the event are asked not to bring in coolers or their pets. To keep the crowd entertained, a local disc jockey spins classic tunes as well as car-themed music throughout the evening.

Moose members do not charge an admission fee but do conduct a 50/50 raffle each week. In the fall, Moose members will donate their half of the proceeds to community service projects.

Now in its fourth year, the Cruise Nights would not be possible without the work of close to 20 Moose members who volunteer their time behind the scenes.

"I have an awesome crew," said Summers.

In September, Moose members will host a "Super Show" that will charge a nominal fee to car owners who wish to participate in the event.
