Sale of garage would benefit city

CHICOPEE If sold to a private concern, the current municipal garage on Meadow Street could bring in an additional $25,000 annual in property taxes, according to Chicopee Mayor Michael Bissonnette.

The city has recently released a Request For Proposals for the property and Bissonnette told The Chicopee Herald that there have already been "substantial inquiries" on the property.

Bissonnette would like to transfer the maintenance and storage roles of the Meadow Street facility to the Department of Public Works headquarters on Baskin Road. He said the Baskin Road complex has adequate space for the increased activity.

The city bought the property for both facilities at the same time.

The city is looking for at least the assessed values of the Meadow Street garage $607,000 but is hoping to get more.

He said city officials would use both the price offered for the property plus the potential of the proposal for job development as priorities in making a decision on the proposal.

Bissonnette said he would imagine the property would be maintained as a garage for a private business.
