CHICOPEE Let the games begin.

Area residents who enjoy playing Scrabble have a new outlet to enjoy the game and make new friends, thanks to the Chicopee Public Library.

Why Scrabble?

"It's a good brain exercise," said Barbara Zawidowski, electronic reference services librarian, during an interview with Reminder Publications.

Zawidowski is handling the logistics of setting up the club with Sylvia Krol who originally approached the library on the idea.

"It's a nice social thing to do in a nice atmosphere," said Krol, adding, "we can benefit so much by meeting new people and learning new words to add to our vocabulary."

Starting June 2, a Scrabble Club is being offered on Fridays from 10:30 a.m. to noon in the community room. The club is open to anyone throughout the area who loves the game. No fees or dues will be charged to participate in the club.

The Scrabble Club will meet through the summer and if there is enough interest in continuing the sessions, the club may continue into the fall, according to Zawidowski.

Since the library only has one Scrabble board, participants are asked to bring their own to ensure everyone will be able to play. Players are also encouraged to bring dictionaries.

"You don't have to be a great Scrabble player, just come and enjoy the game with other Scrabble lovers," added Zawidowski.

Krol echoed those sentiments.

"It's always challenging to see if you can beat your last score," she said.
