City to conduct two auctions of seized properties in May

Date: 4/24/2015

CHICOPEE – The city will be offering eight different properties for sale through two auctions on May 11 and 18.

Treasurer Marie Laflamme explained to Reminder Publications, the auctions are the first ones in several years and will feature both residential and commercial properties taken by the city for lack of payment in property taxes.

On May 11, the commercial properties will be sold. They include parcels at 257 School St., 239 Meadow St., Gagne Street (also known as Mill Street) and at 250 Fuller Road.

The auction on May 18 will feature the residential properties that include 63 Silvin Road, 38 Shepherd St., a parcel on Westport Drive and 46 Harvard St.

Both auctions will take place in the City Council Chambers at City Hall at 5:30 p.m.

Laflamme encouraged potential buyers to drive by to see the properties and added her office would arrange a tour of the buildings if requested. People walking through the buildings would have to sign a liability waiver, she added.

She said that most of the structures are “not bad” in terms of condition, but a “couple are in rough shape.”

The properties are being sold as is, Laflamme stressed.

There will be a minimum or starting bid on each property and Laflamme is gathering the information now to set them.

The bidder will be required to have a bank check or money order in the amount of $5,000 as a down payment for a winning bid, Laflamme said.

Laflamme said the timing of the auction was to take advantage of the good weather and the time of year to make renovations.
