Streiber Students 'Gallop' to good behavior

CHICOPEE Three of the Springfield Falcons stressed the need for respect and good citizenship at a special assembly at the Streiber School on Nov. 30.

Norm Milley, Eric Healey and Mitch Fritz introduced a program of skits about good behavior that was part of the school's "GALLOP" program.

The skits were written by students in an after-school program and covered topics such as showing respect, taking pride in one's work and having good manners. Principal January Wilson explained that "GALLOP" was in the school last year, but that she and her staff wanted to enlarge the program this year. An assembly with local sports heroes was one way to reward her students while emphasizing the goals of the program.

Students are recognized by staff and faculty for actions that show good manners and respect. Not only do they receive recognition at the school, but they also are given a postcard to bring home to show to their parents.

Last year, with a GALLOP pilot program in place at the Selser Memorial School, there was a 40 percent drop in serious discipline incidents and an increased academic performance.

The Streiber program is sponsored by First American Insurance Agency in Chicopee and Wilson said that Dave Matosky of the Agency works with the faculty in developing ways to implement the program.
