TechnoFair

TECHNOFAIR On March 5, fifth grade students at Litwin Elementary School and helped kick-off the TechnoFair that will take place in all Chicopee elementary schools and Holy Name and St. Stan in the month of March. Funded courtesy of Chicopee Electric Light (CEL), the fair is a hands-on means for fifth graders to explore the sciences. Each school will select three winners who will go on to compete in a final fair at Chicopee Public Library on March 25. Students are evaluated on their board's presentation, the scientific method and their oral speech. The three initial finalists from each school receive a $50 savings bond, a T-shirt and an engraved medal that reads "TechnoFair 2008" and the name of their school. The top three finalists of the March 25 citywide finale will receive $100 savings bond. CEL General Manager Jeff Cady told The Chicopee Herald that they have been looking to do something as a part of their community outreach outside of their safety program collaborations. "A lot of effort went into this. [Sometimes] science gets lost in the curriculum," Cady said, adding that this effort ties in with the Massachusetts Comprehension Assessment System (MCAS).
