They're looking for a new home

SPRINGFIELD - Rusty would like a home. So would Regal and Crayola. In fact, all of the dogs, cats, rabbits, mice and rats currently residing at the Adoption Center at the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA)-Angell in Springfield would like to find a home with a loving family.

The MSPCA will be hosting "Be Mine: an Adoption Extravaganza" from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. p.m. Feb. 10 at its center at 171 Union St.

Besides the opportunity for adopting pets, the event will feature how-to clinics on subjects ranging from how to cut a cat's nails to how to use a clicker to train your pet. House Rabbit Connection will be hosting a discussion on the advantages of bunnies as pets and there will also be a bake sale for both humans and animals.

Visitors are invited to bring along their own dog for a professional shot portrait for a $15 donation.

Pam Peebles, the manager of the Animal Care and Adoption Center, said MSCPA is looking for people who are willing to make a long-term commitment to an animal.

"It has to be a well thought out decision," she said.

The staff at the Center has to be matchmakers, she added. For instance, they look to make sure that dogs that love children, go home to families with children and that people seeking to adopt another cat, get one that likes other cats.

The cost of the adoptions ranges from $10 for a small animal to $180 for a dog. Peebles said the costs include neutering the animals, vaccinations, and treatment for worms, fleas and earmites. A microchip for identification purposes is also implanted in the animal.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information on MSCPA services, please call 736-2992 or log onto www.mspca.org and click on the western New England/Springfield homepage.
