Chicopee native is awarded fellowship

Date: 8/14/2015

CHICOPEE – Chicopee Comprehensive High School graduate Tyler I. Gerhardson has been awarded a graduate fellowship at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, to pursue research in the medial uses of ultrasound.

Gerhardson is the son of Jennifer and Bradley Gerhardson.

Gerhardson is a graduate of the Western New England University (WNE) who was inducted into Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society. He explained to Reminder Publications, he applied for the fellowship award, which includes a $10,000 stipend through the honor society.

He is working on his Ph.D. in biomedical engineering at the University of Michigan.

Gerhardson explained ultrasounds are currently used to destroy unwanted tissues such as blood clots or tumors without invasive surgery. Speaking from his lab, he said he is currently working on a trans-cranial application for ultra sound that would allow doctors to use the technology to address problems in the brain.

“It’s kind of fun stuff,” he said.

Gerhardson was an honor student at WNE, where he also worked at FloDesign Sonics in Wilbraham.

“It was an inspiring environment,” he said of the high tech company.

While at WNE, he also served as the president of the Massachusetts Iota Chapter of Tau Beta Pi for the 2014-15 year and spent time tutoring high school students in the greater Springfield area through organizations like GEAR UP Massachusetts.

Gerhardson said he expects to earn his Ph.D. in about three years and said his ultrasound research is “a good mix of technology and helping people.”
