EAST LONGMEADOW Last Tuesday, a beaming Ed Costa, superintendent of East Longmeadow schools, told The Reminder that one in 3.75 East Longmeadow High School students has qualified for the 2006 John and Abigail Adams scholarship, given by the state.

"This is the second year that this scholarship has been made available by Governor Romney and the Legislature," Costa said. He said the award is prestigious, as it allows for four years or eight college semesters of tuition waivers at Massachusetts's state colleges and universities.

"These students were automatically qualified [for the scholarship] based on stringent criteria," he added.

In order to receive the scholarship, Costa said Massachusetts high school students must score in the "Advanced" category on either the math or English language arts section of the MCAS; or they must score "Proficient" in either section and they must score in the top 25 percent of MCAS scores in their school district.

Costa added that, while there has been much distress on the part of educators, students and parents in preparing for the MCAS, the scholarship is truly a benefit.

"This is what makes all our jobs worthwhile," he said. "I am so proud of ... our students who have made a true commitment to academics, and they are reaping the rewards."

Costa said the cost of attending college has followed the trend in the increase in energy costs over the last few years both have risen dramatically.

"We have completely removed one third of the cost equation for an entire quartile of the senior population [at ELHS]," he reflected.

The superintendent also said the accomplishments of the 50 qualifying seniors are a testament to the community's support of the school system.

"Here is the result when you have a quality education system," he said.
