Annual Jaycees Fishing Derby

For over 45 years, the town of East Longmeadow and the Jaycees have continued the tradition of their annual youth fishing derby. This year, 386 children registered to fish, and 248 trout were caught during the four-hour derby. Miss East Longmeadow Gina Rosati was taken on her first-ever canoe ride, and continued the Jaycees' tradition by kissing the biggest trout of the day, Christina's Conant's 15.75 inch rainbow trout. Tony Bordoni, owner of Bodyworks Unlimited in East Longmeadow, with his children, Deanna Bordoni, 10; Michael Bordoni, 6; and Charlie Bordoni, 2; won the raffle for the canoe. Proceeds from the raffle will benefit the Jaycees annual fireworks display. Todd Machecknie, chair of the Fishing Derby, said the Jaycees were able to give away many prizes this year because of the generosity of their sponsors, who they would like to thank. They also thank everyone who helped make the event a success. The derby, he said, is a way to get children more involved and interested in the outdoors and it is hosted each year at Heritage Park, which was developed for the town by the Jaycees. This year's winners were:0-6 division 1st place Christina Conat; 2ndAlex Amsted; 3rd Alexandrea Mitchell; most fish Jeremy Giroux. 7-10 division 1st place Brendon D' Arco; 2nd Nick Lupi; 3rd Emily Oxley most fish Miranda Richardson. 11-14 division 1st place Adina Maloni; 2nd Jonathan Hanna; 3rd Erica Stolpinski; most fish Anthony Barbibri.
